The docking was a bit rough, but they got the wounded Recovery back inside with Explorer and closed the main doors. As the crew was being taken off the damaged ship and checked out, the first officer of Recovery One was seized in a bear hug by the captain of the Reacher. “Jeannie, I’m all right. Put me down, girl. It’s unseemly for a captain to be hugging a first officer in public.”

She matched his grin as she gently released him. “Report, Grandfather.”

“Aye, Captain. When the explosion tossed us away we’d have been fine, but we bounced off the Reacher. That probably didn’t feel like much here, but it was pretty intense for us. Olga tried to shield me and took a head injury. Several others got knocked around a bit, and we took damage to our comms, engine control, and more.

“Chance Morita managed to patch together something that allowed us to regain life support and stabilize the ship. We were working on getting the engines back online when you came running to the rescue.”

“Actually, it was Mandy who organized the rescue. To my great embarrassment, I wasn’t very captain-like, and she had to take over for me. You’d be proud of her, Grandfather, she has that crew of hers operating at peak efficiency. While I was trying to think of what to do next she and her crew rescued you. I transported back to the Reacher to get out of the way and let them work.”

“So, you’ve lost your ship?” he grinned.

“No, Grandfather, the Reacher is my ship. I know that now, and I also know the Explorer is in good hands. Come on, let’s go see if Carla has your captain patched up yet.”

Amanda joined them as they entered the medical bay. A freshly bandaged Olga Volkov was waiting for them. She started to rise, but Carla patted her shoulder to sit her back down. “Oh no you don’t, you stay right there. I want to keep an eye on you for a couple of days.”

“All right, Carla,” sighed Olga, as she relaxed back. “How are you doing, Frank? Are you functional?”

“I am, Captain Volkov. Orders?”

“Stop your damn grinning, go see to the crew, and then wheedle Moira into fixing our ship.”

“It’ll just get blown up again,” muttered a soft voice behind them. They all turned to see a male Earalithian standing there.

“Who are you? What do you mean by that?”

“You are Captain Sorenson, the one we owe our lives to, are you not? Captain Sorenson, I am Dorind. I was the engineer of an ore hauler on the planet you call Frigid. I know it is now, but it was a paradise when we found it.

“Yes, the explosion. There are pockets of explosive gasses all over the planet, or at least there were. If you hit one with a laser drill it will explode. The trick is to find them first.”

“Tell me, Dorind, do you know how to find them?”

“I do. I apologize for speaking out of turn, Captain.
